good point about the spouse thing... they knew u were a smoker when they married u... so they should live with that decision.
but the children thing... even if u smoke while the kids are away, the smoke is still in the house... being... smoke-y.
and the drinking thing... even if u drink in the privacy of ur own home, and get drunk and violent, ur family has to deal with it then... or u drive and kill someone.... same can be said for getting high, if u go drive and kill someone coz uve lost touch with reality.
I personally find drugs, tobacco, and alcohol disgusting things, and when i find out someone uses drugs, smokes tobacco, or drinks alcohol (just drinking it, not necessarily alcoholic) my respect/opinion of that person drops... how much depends on how long ive known them or what/how much they do.
BUT... wont society theoretically be better off if we remove these awful things from it? Natopia may never get to enforce our laws, but at least we can use them as a statement of what we think is right and wrong.
I DO agree with sherry that banning things is an infringement of personal liberties... but, maybe some personal liberties should be infringed... especially the ones that cause society to degrade? however... where do we stop at banning? some say homosexualty degrades society, ban that? some say TV degrades it... ban it? offensive music... censor it? no no no no, i say. but ban drugs? yes! why? i dont know...

interesting note... the only other threads in this board to get more than a page of posts was the Census Creation thread (its defunct now tho) and ironically the thread that removed Sherry as grand judge due to inactivity... lol

*Jaw drops*
Sherry? What?
*Rubs eyes and stares at screen*
And I only left for a couple hours...
Anyway, since I'm past the shock now, we have to clear up a couple things. Banning things like beer and drugs are preventative measures, I think, because they lessen the chance of a child being hurt by them. I once read somewhere that a lot of rapes of children occur when someone is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
By banning such things, we may infringe personal liberties, but it makes it harder for people to get drugs just at their corner store or whatever. It also makes it harder for little kids to just go in and buy them. Sure, they can go to some shady kid in the playground and buy them but aren't parents supposed to teach you that you should never buy/take things from strangers. A store is a more friendly atmosphere and if drugs and alcohol were just for the taking without any age limit, then everything would go crazy.
We should not only ban drugs, but offer education on how harmful it is.
Now, you can say that cars are dangerous to people and they can cause deaths, but does anyone actually go out looking for an accident? And doesn't the benefits of cars outweigh the harm?
What is the benefit of drugs? You just give money to some hotshot who buys drugs from people in third world countries who grow them. Is it good that we're helping the third world nations by buying drugs from them and boosting their economy? Some say it is, but I say it isn't because the people who start to grow them also end up addicted. They don't rise from their new economy because they turn that money around for drugs. Sure not all of them do that, but it happens, doesn't it?
The difference between eating tons of unhealthy food and dying from that and doing drugs is that you have a conscious choice to eat the way you want to. After a certain time, you are so addicted to drugs that you couldn't stop if you really really wanted to. So, when you're really high, you might not consciously realize that you're hurting someone, maybe even a child put in your care. If you're obese, you may hurt the child from your death, but you won't end up accidentally hurting them. Smoking should fall under drugs because you end up accidentally hurting those around you with the second hand smoke.
Governments should let people do whatever they want, but they need to draw the line when innocent people could get hurt from just being around those people.

Ok a lot of talk has happened and i would like to take some time out of my post to say i am happy for Sherry posting and such we now have another active member. *claps*
i watched the cartoon and listened to everyones babling and such and i have somethings to say from an anarchistic/absolute freedom approach.
1)That cartoon was pretty damn funny and i mean it.
2) Of all these years searching for a way for everyone to be completely free will never happen no one can have every right they deserve beacuse humans are and will always be imperfect. I stand up for the belief that everyone should be created equal and not have to be told what to do. But i have realized that that will not always work. Ok heres what i think we should do:
Ban alcohol and all forms of tobacco because many deaths/rape/etc etc happen beacuse of these "substances" Dont you just find it funny that the "substances" that cause the most harm in our nation are legal! Come on! I am not trying to side with drugs right now but doesnt it seem that most of the harm is coming from the legal stuff than the illegal? Thats our nation for you....our nation is so overwhelmed with capitalization that it doesnt matter if its harming our citizens as long as we're making money. What i see that i hope will happen in Natopia is that we WONT have the industries and if we dont have the industries then tobacco and alchol wont be that bad. Well alchol is a different subject i cant stand the stuff, i soo bad want to ban it but look what happened in the 20's we just made it illegally.....So i am just as confused as a wombat getting stuck in a washing machine. Ok here is what we should do Ban alcohol. Ban Tobacco. Use the law to uncover and stop the illegal marketing if there is any. Dont ban drugs just yet....[remeber im not a druggie and i hate them also] see how society is ffetced? Will they do it still if its now illegal?...Is there that many inncidents regarding drugs of the negavite nature kind of use society as a guenie pig and see how "he" reacts. Thats just my idea and i think i've babbled and confused myself any more so im gunna sit down and twiddle my thumbs awhile....

so.... joels plan would be to have THIS law only ban tobacco and to empower the government to crack down on illegal alcohol and tobacco production or smuggling (or stealing into...lol)
and we just allow other drugs to remain totally legal?
either way, i think that at this stage, we've decided that the bill should look like this:
that said, i move to amend the bill to look like that ^

just for $#!7$ and giggles... heres a fully alco-tobacco-druggie ban... with a list of all the drugs i can think of... basically the list of the first bill tacked onto the last version i just posted... which was never officially amended... so i retract that motion and motion to amend the bill to look like this:
everytime we think of a new one... we can just amend the bill... or i can amend it by decree... whichever

Haha, I think there's a list somewhere. Have you ever seen that commercial where the kid says the ABCs of drugs?
